nothin' but melon...

had a long and lovely chat with a friend yesterday
she lives far away but we are still very close
and a phone call usually lasts a long time
YEAH
for cell phones and "free" long distance
we've been friends for half our lives

she gets Martha's magazine too
and she asked if I had seen a certain pretty bench
that Martha had painted her signature blue
that I love and so does my friend

so I went and got my copy and we leafed through the pages together
you know the way one does with a friend over the phone!!!!!
:)

and then this page came up
watermelon hot pads
she wondered how long it must have taken to make them
and how on earth did they get the seeds in there

:)

embroidery
I answered

oh said she
well I can't crochet or embroider so I guess I can forget about that

she said how cute they were and that it's funny how all the old things our grandmother's had
are all the rage now
I said I didn't think that MY granny had these in the kitchen
she lived in Egypt and was Italian
and I don't think they had
cute
in the kitchens

we laughed at all the things that are called vintage these days
the things we had in our kitchens when the kids were little
and have now thrown away
...
if only we'd known how valuable they were
:)
all those things on the shelves of the charity shops
covered in dust and memories
funny how everything goes round in circles

she helped me solve a problem I've been stressing over for a couple of weeks
all you have to do is ask a friend who's known you for a long time
and they tell you what to do and it's the right thing

so after solving all the world's problems
and wondering how those that were waiting for the end to come
would feel today
I mentioned the watermelons again
and she said how neat it would be to have one in the kitchen
(she never thinks to ask )
!!!

so I asked her
you want one
and she answered yes but where would I find one

I said
I'll make you one
.................................................
and I did
.................................................................................................................

I sat and watched one of my favourite movies
the last of the dog men!!!!
and in no time
I had a couple of
melons on my lap
!!!!
isn't it just the greatest thing to make something for a reason
and know that someone will smile and be happy
and all you did was stitch some yarn together
and add a lifetime of friendship in each stitch

so there you go
L
I'll put them in the mail tomorrow and the next time we talk
you can tell me how cute they look in the
kitchen

and as it has turned into Virginia/DC weather overnight
meaning hot and humid
I may just make a couple more
maybe a lemon and an orange
as well
to keep things crisp and fresh
!!!!!

so I presume all of you are still
with us
hope so

  1. I've always loved crocheted watermelons - but I have a sunflower and cow kitchen instead.

The watermelons you crocheted for your friend look good enough to eat. :)
