sometimes

the nothing becomes a something

and

sometimes a something is almost too much to bear

so one wants to stay in the nothing

there was a house fire last evening

six houses up the road from us

it is the house of a friend of ours

a friend we have had for a very long time

my friend didn't make it out of the fire

and her husband is in the burn unit in Richmond Va

with 3rd degree burns

and a broken heart

while we were having dinner

my friend died

and

 I can't understand

the reason I start with

Kim
and I can't think of a happier sweeter place to start!!!

is that her blog was the first I started reading when I found these things called

blogs

I had never seen so much colour put together in such a wonderful way

yes
 moi of the beige

of the white and blue
of the plain and simple
!!!!

saw all this colour the way it should be put together
and
I fell in love

 I hovered   I marvelled
 I wondered if I could ever....
I lurked
 a lot
as they call it when you visit but don't comment

then I bumped into her photos on Flickr

and got a bit bolder about commenting

and

over this past summer
I have been following and watching as

Kim
has been posting photos of the lake she lives near!

and recording the lives of the swans and ducks that live there
and other things

some of it has been literally

heartbreaking

great big sobs and huge hot tears

as life and death played out in front of us

(mama swan)

I've been more upset for her than I have for the poor little creatures
who were here for such a short time

because I know how much it hurts to have these encounters with those we share this planet with

even little tiny chicks barely big enough to see

but once they are in your heart

it's so very hard when they die

and Kim has had her share of heartbreak this summer

so deep and so raw
 has been her sadness
it's hard to leave the photos and just ignore that side of life

so I left a few notes of understanding and support
 and she responded in her sweet way

with love and kindness and friendship

and

BTW

Kim doesn't hook or knit or sew

that I know of!!!!!

she has many many

many

other talents

and will be pursuing them soon

and I hope the

one she calls

"little one"

will be the way through to the things she wants and hopes for
and deserves

don't understand

but it's just me

I'm popping in because I want to thank those who think what I did yesterday

is good

You have no idea how many photos I took trying to make sense of what I was doing

I saw a tut for this very thing ages ago

but of course I lost it and can't remember where I saw it

and it was so well done

clear and precise and well written

just like I'd do it

it's dark outside

it's dark inside

it looks cool

coz it's dark

and the reason for the darkness

there is wetness outside

the sound of dripping

when I went to the mail box

I got raindrops falling on my head

I smiled

it's very very humid

so it will continue to rain all evening

all evening they said

yeah!

 and it's not as hot but it's still hot

I have a tub full o'yarn

in many bright happy colours

that I seem to have collected over time

they are all the same type so there is no

problem using them

I bought myself one of those hooks that are showing up all over

it was a bit expensive

for a hook of no specialness that I  could see

and I didn't have my

40% off coupon with me so it was

full price

but that's OK

it didn't break the bank!!!!!

then I used it

and I pronounce it

wonderful

is a developing storm

my favourite name for a girl

if I had had a daughter

she would be an

EMILY

I didn't have a girl

I had two

sons

who refuse to answer to that name

wimps

and the cat was already named when we got her

not that she answers to anything

but the call of the bowl

so all I have to say

to the storm in the Atlantic Ocean

how to line a bag on a wing and a prayer...

I am not a sewer
(one that sews)

I do not pretend to be

I can make things with a needle

and even easy things on the machine

I haven't for years

but I suppose if I put my mind to it I could still make a

skirt or blouse or even a pair of pants

but I don't sew much anymore

the other day when I posted the photos of the two little bags I made

 

one of my Flickr friends asked me to show how I line them

she said she always manages to make hers a 1/4" too short

I tend to make mine a tad too big

so let's see if I can find a happy medium

and make one that fits

I took photos as I went along and they are very good

coz there is no light

I won't even mention why

so let's see what a mess we can make

lining a couple of little bags

this one's for you

I usually just flatten the bag out

lay it on the fabric

and cut a half an inch from the edge

see real professional

for the square one

which I had already started to make when I posted

I did the same thing

flatten the bag

cut around the outside 1/2"

sew and fold the top down where needed

only because it's square-ish

I made the bottom flat by sewing in 1.5" on the side seams

see, now it has a flat bottom

oh don't we all wish!!

the knitted bag has 1/2" seams on the sides

and then I laid the lining on the bag

and measured how much to fold the top down

sewed around it

and put it inside the bag

it fit so I pinned it

I decided not to carry the lining all the way up on the sides

as that would have entailed too much cutting and folding and fiddly bits so the lining is straight across the top

the hooked one was just a straight shot all around

it's a tiny bit on the big side

as always

but it fits well enough

then I sew it along the edge using the line of the stitches

and

voila

a little lined bag

for

whatever

I'm now almost finished on something else

just a couple  of tails left to

weave in

and it's done

see this is completely useless for anyone who doesn't know how to line a bag

I know Dutzie does because she did a fantastic professional job on a bag she just made

so this was just coz I said I would

cabin fever and have not been  a

cheerful charlie of late

so I'm being quiet

I have had it with

summer

droughts

republicans

morons

misfits

expletive deleteds

I know some of you haven't had a lot of sun or even warmth

well

I envy you

 I would take a wet cold summer over what we have any day

it's so sad to see the flowers and plants just wither away

after such a lovely Spring

the big trees are dropping their leaves

 all the bushes are wilting and it's useless to water because it puts them into stress

the animals are suffering too

panting birds and stressed out squirrels isn't nice to see either

poor little things

even the geese stay in the water all day long

it's too darn hot

on land
