OK it's a bracelet

one of those that have been around for a while now

but keep showing up all over the place and...

I found a video of one, thanks to Elaine and decided that I was sick of just looking and...

oohing and aaaaahhhhing over them and...

so I got my stash out and...

la dee dah dee dah and...

I got me a new bracelet
it's really easy to make
you need some leather cord
some thin but strong thread
I had some silk from days gone by
and a button and some beads
I have all of that
in my drawers :o
and...
this video to show you how to put it all together
which I knew but it's nice to have a voice talking to you while you do it!!!
do have a go....you can use some old beads from a broken piece if you have them
or go out and spend a few bucks, pounds, yen, francs, lire, kroner on yourself
it's fun and cheap!!!

I was looking for something else and bumped into this lot

polymer clay days

beads and bracelets and dangley bits

OH MY!!!

seems I was learning how to make

swirls and feathers and jungle type things

I do remember a friend asking me to make her sister,

who lives in the Yucatan,

some jewels with a jungle theme

well that's what I understood she wanted

her English is no'so goot

and she did like what I made and actually wore it a lot

but I don't really know why I still have these

I do also remember learning how to make the feathers

that was fun and interesting

but

like so many things

it sits in a drawer now

this is what I was wanting to do the other day so I did

a tiny hexagon

and

done on three needles

so I practiced on bigger yarn and bigger needles

and I made one

well two if you count the little one too

it's so nice to know I have learnt something over all this time

may just put that on the canvas now I see how it looks

so that's all the crazy there is today

the temperature rose over night

we had a squall come through at around 8.30 a m that turned it black outside

How glad am I this weeks over

VERY...

won't bore you all with why

just know I'm glad it's gone

now don't think I expect the next one to be all

so I decided that if I've got one I may as well start just using it

and getting used to it

so I took some snaps while the kettle was on

I discovered how to zoom

and turn the flash off

how to zero in on something

it still feels really clumsy and awkward

but soon I won't remember how not to do it

I wanted to show the

violets are blooming

so we have a tiny bit of colour around

cabin fever setting in...

took this through the screen on the window

it snowed a little more than this

but it got too dark to see it

it's all gone

and it's raining now

and I have a headache

and it's cold-ish

found these on the camera

grandson

he likes owls

well he did the last time he was here

I think he likes it all when he sees it

and then forgets what it was

that's what being 6 is all about

the more I work on this the more I hate the yarn

and I don't know if I will have enough

that's all there is of it

and I can't get more as it was discontinued

I still like the pattern and still find it easy

even though

today

I had a near disaster

mis counted, mis read,

stitches fell off

different from them being pushed off on purpose

but

with a lot of patience

and bright light

I managed to get back to a place I could start again

and I have finished one more column

this yarn tends to split and has some areas where the ply is broken

it's annoying me!!!

amber-ish glass rounds ... perfectly sized to go through the holes in the cable stitch

the weather this weekend was fantastic

so... have you been collecting all those tp and paper towel rolls

like the good Eco friendly bunch that you are

and

short of covering the walls with "sculptures"

or windows with "snowflakes"

what else have you done with them

I made some spools with some

I cut the roll about 2.5" long

cut two circles using the

Vick's jar top as a guide

glued the ends and stuck the circles on

found some paper in the drawer I was looking through

when all this

paper crafting suddenly hit

and

covered the ends with it

to make it look vintage and antique :P

and from another drawer

took the left over bits and wrapped it around the spools

e voila

leftover yarn

on leftover rolls

now we're savin' the planet!!!

I made a little cover

for the new gadget...

I didn't want the screen to get scratched in my bag

or for the thing to be turned on accidentally and scan the Web on its own

and pick up some sort of

nasty

husband has been

what they call

'butt dialled"

by his sister no less

that means that you sit on the phone and it randomly dials a number

unbeknownst to you!!!

I made it with this

daffodil coloured silk blend I've had for a while

figured it's soft enough not to scratch

it's quite bright and loud too

and I thought I would be able to see it easily in the

dark pit of the bag

but...

husband got a real and genuine gadget protector

made of leather/ette (?) that fits much better

and protects much better

this will be used for something else

I used that wonderful cable stitch I found

and used on the funky chunky scarf

it makes a thick fabric which is why I used it to make the bag

that isn't needed and that won't be used

oh well...

maybe a tissue holder?

and finally

(I hear you cheering!!!)

I've turned the corner on the new attempt at making something new and different

I haven't worked on it very much since I showed you the other day

but this morning I sat and knitted and with each stitch

marveled at the age old wonder of

why are hard looking things easy

making holes out of curves...and getting to drop stitches

when we were old enough to stay up late

and actually bring in the new year with the

grown ups

my father would be given a little packet of something and thrown out the back door

only to re-appear at the front door

as the clock was stricking

mid night

it wasn't for ages that I found out what the hell they were doing

well you know

champers and booze and a little party partay

made the

old folk act weird sometimes

well

flash forward a few years and it was

husband who was given a little packet and thrown out the back door

only to re-appear at the front

my mother always took care of this

and when my sons were old enough

we threw son #1 out

he has dark eyes which apparently makes it

stronger

for those of you who are lost and thinking of leaving

it's the

first footing tradition

of which I speak

the first person through the door sets the mood for the year

they are supposed to bring gifts with them

salt

tea

bread

and

money

is what we always did

I always wondered

as I sat in the semi-darkness and watched

as things were taken out of the cupboards

and pockets and salt cellars and tea caddies

if it made a difference that the first things in

were already here

but

not to be the one to

cross the forces that be

may your first footer bring you

health wealth

above all

happiness

I will be trying to figure out the

new gadget

and wondering

hello there....

no stress of buying everything you see

used to do it but then one year I found out that no one noticed all the things I didn't get done

I like it when Christmas things start mingling with everyday things

on his trip through the house the other day

the grandson found these in the drawers

and I put two things from different people together

need to re-arrange and tidy up a bit

anyway I saw that the header photo was a quarter of the size it should be

all be it a bit on the large end of things

so I went to where you are supposed to be able to change things

by the time we got home

so they joined

wasn't really thinking of posting today

but then I went to Flickr

and saw a seven day old comment

on a photo I posted

who knows when...

it's from Mahdu

who saw something in the background of the photo and made mention

it's a plate that belonged to my mother

it's old and chipped and the glaze is all crazy

but I keep it

....

it was my mother's!!!!

I remember being told as a child that my Mother had a "thing"

for tea sets and dinner services

as they were called

anything china actually

apparently when they lived in Egypt and had a nice house and were probably all settled in

expecting to live their life there

she collected them

but history took over the story and

in what must have been a very short and stressful time

they swooped my sister and I up and carried us off

out of a country in turmoil

into another

strange and unknown

I have no memory of Egypt or our arrival in Kenya

I do remember our first house there

but not the journey to it

having no memory of Egypt makes my memories of childhood in Africa the place I think of as home

in a way

we had tons of friends

my parents lived a good life

and the memories are of wonderful things and sights

and even more wonderful holidays in other even more exotic places

the sister and I really do appreciate how very lucky we were to have lived that as young children

and then when the bad times came again

I most certainly was too young to understand the danger and the stress of having to

once again up and leave a life behind

and move on

this time to my father's home land of England

I was 10 when we got there and the first memory is of

feeling cold

we arrived in January

and it was

cold

I can still see us

standing on the thing in the middle of the road waiting to cross to go and buy

winter coats for us all

and my mother crying because her girls were

cold!!!!

honest....

I even remember the coat

it was tweedy but in blues

and it felt strange

we had no home there of course

my father had no family or place to live

so we stayed in a bed and breakfast

that was run by someone my parents knew from another visit I think

but it was cold and smelly and we didn't like it

and we ate at what was called a

"caff"

in England

a cafe but they mispronounced it

don't know if they still have them or call them that!!!

Ruth...Mia...Elaine..... anyone!!!

anyway the food was horrid and so was everything else

my poor mother and father

it must have been hell for them

they left everything behind....again

we just had what they could carry and the clothes on our backs

but we had a place to go

some didn't

so we were OK

just a bit lost I guess

and after a while we found a place to live

just down the road from

HRH Elizabeth II

who

I used to visit

well, she never knew I was there

but I knew she was!!!!!!

and my mother got herself some new

china sets

and this is all that's left of her last one

I did dream once of getting it all replaced from that china company that finds old china

it drives me crazy too

I showed you the stars yesterday

well here is a half a star

the other half still to finish

the grandson found this the other day

one of those teeny tiny little things I was making a while back

it comes from some site where she makes little pin cushions in tea cups!!!

so....

well I don't have to say it

one finished fingerless mitten

started the other day while watching a movie

it's just a chain of 32

I used my hand ...it measures a little more than 7.5 inches around the knuckles!!!

but it isn't for me !!! so I hope the person they're for has hands close to the same size!!!!!

sc all the way around for 6 rows

on the seventh row

skip about 8-10 stitches by making a chain of 8-10 sts

and in the 9/11th st sc around

that is the thumb hole

when you reach the chain on the next row just sc around it and continue

round and round and round we go

until it's long enough

I stuck a pretty edge of two rows of star stitch at the end

and

cast off

the second one is on the hook!!!

love this colour!!!

then yesterday while I was surfing and perusing

I saw something that tickled my fancy

so out came the #6's and the merino mix yarn

and after a good gander at the picture

I cast on 24 stitches

we had to go out so i took it with me and did quite a lot in the car

the pattern?

cast on 24 sts

knit to the second to last st

yo and knit last stitch

turn and knit back

do this for ten rows

you will have little peaks at one end and 28 stitches!

on the eleventh row join a new colour

make sure you are at the flat, even, not peaked edge

and knit all stitches

turn

knit two stitches

bind off the first

do this until you have bound off four stitches

knit back to the beginning

change back to the first colour

and repeat the

ten rows

knit to the second to last stitch

yo and knit last stitch

turn and knit back

on the eleventh row change colour and knit to end

turn and bind off the first four stitches

and what you end up with

is like a crown

and on the top are little eyelets

my only problem is................................................. I ran out of the white yarn

so I had to frog it and change the scheme

red with white instead

white.......

oh well what's new

and I'll finish a proper pattern if anyone wants it!!!

plus I've been changing passwords on everything

and answering emails as to whether I had sent this that and the other

and doing the wash and trying to decide what to have for dinner

I am sorry to report that my e-mail account has been hacked

phished or stolen

whatever the phrase for being

screwed by a stranger

the whole Hotmail list has been contacted by some phantom creature

the carrier has contacted me and as far as I know all has been taken care of

it's so annoying and frustrating

like those phone calls you get with computers on the other end

there are addresses on the list

that haven't been used for

ever

people I don't see or talk to or know anymore

and yet they will get a message from "me"

telling them to hurry and buy some Viagra or some other crap

I have noticed that there was another one of those

I call them

scanners

on the stats page on the blog

that's why the numbers in a day go into the hundreds

it isn't people reading your words

it's a phantom computer looking to find a way in

I don't have pictures but I thought you might like to know

that

the cup cakes were shared with the rest of the family

the ornaments that I we made were hung on the tree

and the other things (???) were put under the tree

between him, his father, and I we made a

"necklace" for his mum

which I put in a little box

and he wrote her name on it

and wanted to include the surname (last name) too

but I dissuaded him

not every one needs their last name attached

sometimes I look at all the stuff I have stuffed in this room

and think I should just toss it all

but then

they come

and the look on their faces makes it all worth keeping

T says she remembers it all

and likes the chest of drawers that is full of all sorts of things
that's where the paper and pencils and crayons and markers and paints come from

if you ask me

I usually can find it in that chest of drawers
from the paper and pencils to jars empty and full!!
fabric cardboard etc etc etc...

when you are crafty and do things

you need lots of things to do it all with

right???

so I'll hang on to it for a while longer I guess

...it started raining last night

I heard it on and off all night long

but at 5.30 a m it came down in buckets

so I got up

the sky is white with cloud cover

it's still warm

in the 60's all night long

but the cold is coming and it's right behind all this

it never did get very light

but it's kept raining

and the ducks even had enough

and the goose

they're going to try and find a drier spot

but that won't be under the dock for a while

see how high the water is

for those of you who have had to see this view forever

you'll see the difference!!!!

and see it's up over the wall too

but it's no biggy as the youngest used to say

we are way up the hill from there

so I put the

away for a bit

and got out the thread and the tapestry needles

the photo from yesterday was getting on my nerve

yes I only have one left

for lots of reasons

mostly caused by

MOI!!!

here is a better job on the pattern

it has the right amount of stitches

and it measures

2x2"

which is

5cm?

I had the floss out so I added a few stitches to it

and a little loop

if you don't want one don't

you can join them horizontally to make a garland

or stuff them with something smelly and throw it in a drawer

never to be seen again!!!!

the floss was out because I have seen some embroidered buttons

and I just had to have a go

but...

I can see now that the bottom of it doesn't show at all well so stitches will be removed and replaced with

darker thread

it isn't a bouquet of flowers

it's a mushroom

it's OK you may laugh!!!!

and when I find all the ~~crap~~ stuff I have stashed away in the cupboard it's nice coz then I can just use what I have

and I have by the boatload

like the little beads that have sat there for a long time

but I have lived here forever

so the cupboard is full

a little bit of Fall is still hanging around

the sweet mums are still with us

I looked for some Christmas-y flowers in the stores but they dont' have them yet

a few years ago I bought nothing but bright red carnations and made little tight bunches of them

and shoved them in anything they would fit in

I liked it

but so far no red

they did have

so I came home with a bag of ginger cookies

lousy title but that's what it is

there is a little heart floating around and seems there isn't a pattern

I've seen it in lots of different places

don't know who did it

but here it is in

English

with the yarn of your choice

most of the ones I've seen are made with cotton

but it doesn't have to be

ch 12

sc across

ch 1 turn and sc across

basically make yourself a square

don't cut the yarn when your're satisfied with the square

find the middle of one of the sides

the one closest to the last stitch you just made is probably the best :)

and

make 9 triple crochets in that middle point

when you have made the first

"shell"

make a sc in the corner and make another shell of 9 trc on the next side

fasten off

join yarn in the middle of the shells and make an edge around to tidy it up

use sc or hdc

when you get back to the beginning

ss it to the first stitch and if you like make a long chain to hang it from

the end

I made this as fast as I could

it's also smaller than the pattern but it doesn't matter what size you make

it's the same idea

a square

with two

round things on two sides

the photo is complete rubbish

no light and red yarn make for a disaster

16 dc in a circle

join

a row of 1dc ch 1 1dc in every other stitch

so you end up with 8 "shells"

next row

2dc ch1 2dc ch1

in each shell

next row it's

3dc ch1 3dc

ch1 in between

then we have 4dc ch1 with a chain in between

you'll have 8 sets of shells in the white

not so hard

HUH!!!

change to whatever colour you choose

and in the space between the 4dc join and sc ch 3 2sc in what is now a corner

sc in between the stitches

not on top as usual

that's how the spiky look is done

sc all the way around

join at first corner

slip st into the space if needed and

ch3 make a dc

ch 3

3dc in the corner space

now to keep it straight only dc to the first space between sets of shells

in the stitch after the space do a

hdc

then sc across

do this all the way around

dc and then a hdc and then maybe 5 sc hdc and back to dc

that way it stays straight along the edge

the last row is one of sc all the way around with 3sc in each corner space

as I said at the beginning
if this belongs to someone and they don't want it shared

I will remove it

but it's very nice and most appropriate at this time of year

so I made a leaf and some berries

shame all the rest couldn't be as cute
